Pictures that represent influences in my life.

By Brianna Bekkers

“When I feed the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why people are poor they call me a communist.”
-Dom Helder Camara
This poster was on the wall at the place that I stayed in Mexico. At first I didn’t think anything of this poster till I learnt more about the challenges that they were forced to face. The government blinds the local citizens by making them think they are trying to help.  In reality, it is a scheme for the Government to maintain power. Once people begin to question certain methods,  the blame shifts to the revolutionaries instead of the corruption that is actually occurring.

At this moment I realized how small I actually am in the world. It is amazing to see how one small voice can encourage others to have faith and stand up for what is right. The Government might have more intense methods to prevent people from acting on what is right. However, if people come together, that one voice can be big enough for the whole world to hear. Marther Luther King took a stand for Blacks and for equality and he helped create a better world for them with the support of others

This is a gas chamber that the Jews were forced into so they could “take a shower.”  Instead of water pouring out, poisonous gas filled the chamber and killed many innocent individuals. To see this picture that my sister took makes me realize that it actually did happen and it wasn’t just something people made up. As well, to know that the Government was behind all of this, the power that is supposed to keep people safe. It makes you question if they are planning for something like this again.
