"Where are you From?"

I am a Canadian of Chinese ancestry.  My family has lived on this land, witnessed the creation of the Canadian state, and created Canadian history since 1788.
So what do you mean, 'Where are you from?' Where are YOU from?

The best thing about unityis that if the bond is strong enough, we can always overcome the obstacles. Unity is important becauseif everyone contributes, the combined energy is bigger and it takes us closer to changing this world forthe better. Different governments around the world should start working together because most of theproblems we have can be solved by just simply joining forces and working together.

In my collage I added influential people like former governor generals, Michaelle Jean and Adrienne Clarkson. I also put in Canadian gold medalist springer, Donovan Bailey and scientist/environmental activist David Suzuki who has been very influential in environmental science and has grown up experiencing the hardships of living in a Japanese internment camp.

My art represents a family with two different cultural backgrounds. In this case, the father is white, and mom is black. Due to this mix marriage, they have two kids, son is black and the daughter is white. My main goal was to express the idea that despite the colour difference, we are all humans living in one nation. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “We may have all come on different ships but we’re all in the same boat now”. What he was trying to say is that it doesn’t matter where our ancestors come from; we’re all in the same country today, living together as one community.

All in all, this course helped me to understand the fact that racism and discrimination only results in chaos. Sometimes we should put ourselves in other person’s shoes and realize what it’s like to be bullied, ignored or discriminated. By doing so we could easily understand the negativity of racism and discrimination and act in order to stop such chaotic activities in our generation. Therefore, we as humans should recognize the cultural differences and unite with each other as one nation.

Common Ground and Common Goals

By Merissa Mccaffrey-kohler

This piece of artwork symbolizes people of different races, joining together on common ground and achieving a common goal. The clouds are meant to signify peace. In our current, multicultural society, cooperation is necessary in order to begin to learn the lesson that racial discrimination should be intolerable.
